I actually think George and Lennie need and care for each other more than they think they do.Each person needed the other to survive and they formed really strong bonds. When Crooks said the George might not come back because he was injured, Lennie immediately got aggresive and threatened Crooks. This shows that Lennnie doesn't want George to be hurt nor leave him alone in the world. Lennie is a very simple person: defend people he likes.
Also, at the end of the book, George shoots Lennie in the back of the head. I think that George did that because he felt some responsibility towards Lennie. Curley was going to shoot Lennie regardless of whether his wife's death was an accident or on purpose and wouldn't listen to reason. There is a possibility that George didn't want Lennie to die terrified of someone. Lennie wanted to live on a ranch tending rabbits, so George let him die thinking that they would really get that ranch. When I thought about the situation a little more, I realized that Lennie might not be very bright because of something George did, which led to him doing stupid things and Curley's wife's death; George may have felt some guilt about what happened, so he wanted to end Lennie's suffering.
The final reason why i think George and Lennie are closer than they seem is because George didn't want Lennie to leave him. Lennie asked George if he should leave him and go live in a cave while petting mice. George told him to get that idea out of his head immediately. George has wits. He can survive on his own. Lennie kept getting him in trouble and they would have to move around. A person today would have told Lennie to leave so that he wouldn't be a pain in the behind anymore. But George didn't do that; he told himto stay. This makes me think that they may have been very close. It's also possible they were friends at a young age or cousins.
