In general, Asians eat rice a lot. Thats one reason they like itI think he mixed up the sentences. I would make more sense if it said, "In general, Asians like rice a lot. That's why they eat it so much."
There are a few points that I'd like to point out to Billly in case he missed them.
1. "Asians" is too general. Not all Asians each rice.
2. Rice is considered the world's most widely comsumed food. So why is the question, "Why do Asians eat rice?" instead of "Why do humans eat rice?"?
There is also a VERY important fact that Billy missed. Rice is a lot like wheat and barley. It's very easy to grow and plentiful in amount. Lots of people can live off one farmer's work. So if there's a lot of rice and not so much of everything else, rice would obviously be cheaper. People buy cheaper food to save money. Would you rather buy a 50 pound bag of rice for 20 dollars and feed a family for several weeks or buy 5 chicken or so to feed a family for 2-3 days?
Also, rice is alike to wheat and barley in more than one way. It can be eaten or drank(rice wine). You can eat bread, which is made of wheat, or drink beer, which I seem to remember has some wheat ingredients.
Other than the fact that it can be consumed in many ways and is cheaper, rice doesn't need to be tended as much as cattle, chicken, or pigs. Let the rice fields flood and the rice will grow without your intervention. You only need to pick the rice and package it off. It's hard work, but you get to relax while the rice grow.
Possibly another reason why rice is so popular is because it can be flavored. Soy sauce, soup, ketchup, and lots more can be used to flavor the rice, because the rice absorbs it. This means the meals aren't bland.
So if you look at rice in every way possible, you see that it's flavorable, easy to grow, bountiful, high in carbohydrates, and can feed a family for a long time, you'll easily see why Humans(not "asians") eat rice.
